House of the Tanners
Since the Middle Ages, the water of the Ill River has played a crucial role in Strasbourg's economic activity, especially for tanners and millers who settled in the Petite France district.
The Maison des Tanneurs, built along a branch of the river, perfectly illustrates this artisanal tradition. This original building, consisting of two overhanging floors on the street side, is topped with attics specially designed for good ventilation.
In the past, a gallery façade opened directly onto the Ill, providing tanners with optimal conditions to treat leather and dry hides using the wind and natural light.
