Hundsruck Pass

Perched at 748 meters altitude in the heart of the Vosges mountains, in the Haut-Rhin department, the Hundsruck Pass is a strategic route between the Thur and Doller valleys.

It is connected by the Route Joffre, a 15-kilometer road opened during World War I to facilitate French troop access to both valleys and supply the front at Hartmannswillerkopf – Vieil-Armand, a major battlefield of the time.

At the summit of the pass stands a monument dedicated to the 1st Shock Battalion. It honors the soldiers who fought in November 1944 in this area and liberated the village of Bourbach-le-Haut.

This iconic site also serves as a starting point for many hikes, offering routes to Thannerhubel or the Rossberg massif, for nature and history enthusiasts.
