Ill Canal

Built between 1846 and 1850, this artificial canal was designed to capture and divert the high waters of the Ill River. Its main purpose was to prevent the floods that regularly threatened the city of Strasbourg. Thanks to this infrastructure, the river's floods no longer submerge the central districts, ensuring better safety for residents and urban activities.
