Jacques Prévert Nursery School
In 1834, Mulhouse saw the birth of the first nursery school in the Haut-Rhin department, a forerunner of modern kindergartens.
This private initiative came from the wives of André and Nicolas Koechlin, two influential local figures.
From its opening, the establishment welcomed 150 children, thus allowing mothers to be absent to work.
The success was rapid: in 1896, 453 children attended the nursery, then 561 in 1906.
In 1861, the City of Mulhouse became its owner.
Today, the historic building is not open to public visits.
