Jewish Cemetery

The Jewish cemetery of Marmoutier, established in 1798, is nestled on the edge of a forest, away from the town center. It contains about 500 simple sandstone tombstones, arranged in a peaceful and green setting. Among them is the grave of Moyse Raphaël, a minister who died in 1799, located near the oldest tomb. This memorial site reflects Jewish traditions through its symbols: the blessing hands of priests, the pitcher of the Levites, and the joined hands symbolizing the union of a couple. The epitaphs often end with the abbreviation of the ritual phrase "May his soul remain in the bond of the living." Accessible from Rue Neuve, visitors must take a pedestrian passage under the railway and then walk about 300 meters towards the forest to reach it.
