Joseph Scharsch Wines Estate

The Scharsch winery, located in Wolxheim at the heart of the Alsace Golden Crown, marks the start of the Alsace wine route.

This village is renowned for its wines, especially Riesling, thanks to two exceptional terroirs: the Grand Cru Altenberg of Wolxheim and the Rothstein lieu-dit. The Grand Cru, backed by the limestone cliff of the Horn, produces distinguished wines, while the south-facing Rothstein, sheltered by the old royal quarry, yields subtle and elegant wines.

Since 1755, eight generations of winemakers have succeeded each other at the estate to enhance this 12-hectare vineyard farmed organically. The soil diversity allows the production of the seven traditional Alsace grape varieties: Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Muscat, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer. Chardonnay is reserved for making Crémant d’Alsace.

Since 2009, the entire estate has been managed with organic viticulture, without herbicides, fertilizers, or chemical treatments. The tasting cellar offers estate wines, with a fee for groups (€3 per person). It remains closed during the harvest period.
