Julia
Commissioned by the City of Mulhouse in 2011, Yves Lemarque's sculpture *Julia* pays tribute to the city's iconic chimneys, once earning Mulhouse the nickname "the city of a hundred chimneys." This scaled-down replica reflects the industrial past of the Nouveau Bassin district while offering a fresh interpretation of this local heritage.
The artist chose the name *Julia* deliberately to create an immediate connection with passersby. This common first name invites viewers to associate the work with someone they know, evoking personal memories. This humanization gives the sculpture a unique identity far beyond its industrial form.
Additionally, Yves Lemarque incorporated small holes all around the sculpture. Positioned at eye level, these openings allow viewers to look inside the piece, providing a new perspective and an unprecedented interaction with the installation.
