Kaltenbrunnen Picnic Area
The rest area occupies the route of the old military road built in 1904 to serve the Fort of Emperor Wilhelm II. Stretching 2.5 km, this road was used during wartime to transport heavy equipment and supplies to the fortress.
Today, it is bordered by one or two paved ditches and marked by posts engraved with the initials FG, which stand for Festungs Gelände (fortification ground).
Among the remnants from that era, only the Kaltebrunne fountain has been preserved. It was fully restored in 2000 thanks to the efforts of the members of the Soultz-les-Bains municipal council.
