Kefferberg Wine Hill
About twenty kilometers west of Strasbourg lies the Kefferberg hillside, one of the jewels of the Couronne d’Or vineyard, one of the oldest wine-growing areas in Alsace. Vines have been cultivated here since the 4th century, as evidenced by the remains of patrician villas found between Kirchheim and Marlenheim, near the ancient Roman city of Argentoratum (Strasbourg).
This unique terroir, composed of clay mixed with calcareous-sandstone layers, benefits from optimal sunlight thanks to its gently south-facing slopes and a particularly dry microclimate. The surface silica acts like a magnifying glass, concentrating heat and promoting delicate acidity in the dry wines. These exceptional conditions give rise to gastronomic wines, rich in aromas and substance.
Below the hillside, the Bruche river plays a key role: its humidity encourages the development of botrytis, the famous noble rot that transforms grapes into soft or sweet wines of great finesse. Late Harvest and Selection of Noble Berries wines find an ideal environment to flourish here.
The Ergersheim vineyard, where all Alsatian grape varieties grow, is easily accessible and offers remarkable panoramas: the Vosges to the west, Strasbourg Cathedral to the northeast, and the Saint-Michel chapel of Ergersheim, the last remnant of a village destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.
