Kessler Enclosure Tower

Built in 1372, the Kessler Tower, also known as the enclosure tower, stands taller than the other defensive structures in the city at 22 meters high.

Its original entrance, located high up, was accessible only by a removable ladder, allowing it to be protected during an attack by removing access to assailants.

A commemorative plaque on its wall honors the twenty internees who awaited deportation there under Nazi occupation.

The tower was also used as a prison for dozens of people during the violent protests of 1943, before they met a tragic fate. Today, the Kessler Tower has exchanged its repressive functions for a peaceful presence, marked by the comings and goings of storks that have made their home on its rooftop peak.
