La Broque

Founded around a Benedictine priory from the 9th century belonging to the Abbey of Senones, La Broque (Vipucelle) saw the construction of a castle around 1205 by Count Henry III of Salm. In the 16th century, the Salm family became its sole ruler, but the territory remained undivided and shared between its two branches. The town thus became a divided borough, with one half under the authority of the Dukes of Lorraine until 1751, when the Prince of Salm-Salm recovered all rights. In 1793, La Broque was attached to the Vosges department before being detached in 1871 by the Treaty of Frankfurt. During World War II, the Schirmeck re-education camp was established there.

Today, the town hosts an Intermarché supermarket and various businesses.

Among the must-see sites are the Schirmeck camp barracks, the Counts of Salm castle, the Mennonite cemetery listed as a Historic Monument, and the Kupferschmidt farm. The former La Claquette ribbon factory, founded by the Spach family, illustrates the local industrial history and now houses a hotel establishment.
