Labaroche

Nestled in the heart of the Vosges Mountains, Labaroche is a charming, peaceful, and sprawling mountain village made up of about thirty hamlets. Surrounded by generous and preserved nature, it offers tranquility, fresh air, and numerous sports activities such as mountain biking and hiking through meadows, forests, and hills. On clear days, the Bernese Alps appear on the horizon, adding a majestic touch to the Vosges landscape.

The village is home to the ruins of the Hohnack Castle, the highest fortress in Alsace. Dismantled by order of King Louis XIV, it can be visited on foot and offers views alternating between greenery and reliefs. Labaroche also bears the marks of its turbulent history: during World War I, it was the site of the bloody Battle of Linge, then was severely damaged by 90% during the bombings of the winter of 1944-45. To understand these events, the Linge Memorial, open from April to November 11, recounts the trench warfare and pays tribute to the bravery of the French soldiers.

For a family visit, the "playful walk - Hohnack Castle" guidebook offers a hike punctuated with puzzles suitable for children. Also not to be missed is the woodcraft and heritage space, housed in a former sawmill. This museum displays over 800 old wooden toys and historic machines, brought to life by passionate guides during captivating tours.
