Langenstein
This pink sandstone monolith, called "puddingstone" due to its pebbly texture, stands on a wooded path near the Romanian cemetery. Erected in 1906 by archaeologist and industrialist Kessler from Soultzmatt, it was placed there for visitors of the Soultzmatt thermal baths to admire during their walks. According to local legend, on full moon nights, fairies or White Ladies come to dance around the "Langenstein," and the stone then begins to spin on its own.
The menhir has an almost square base, with dimensions ranging from 1 m to 1.16 m depending on the side, and a height of 4 meters. It appears to align with the "Appenthal." To reach it, from Soultzmatt, head towards Wintzfelden, then at the crossroads after the mineral springs, turn left towards Schweighouse and Buhl. Upon reaching Gauchmatt, park near the football field and take the forest path located to the northeast. After a five-minute walk, the Langenstein will appear on the left.
