Lower Castle and 16th Century Altarpiece
In the heart of Sundgau, Steinbrunn-le-Haut stretches around the Oberbrunnen, a spring exploited since Antiquity by the Romans.
Founded in 1025 under the authority of the Habsburg lords, the village changed hands several times before being marked by the Thirty Years' War, which in 1635 reduced its two castles, the Oberschloss and the Unterschloss, to ruins.
In 1689, the lords of Reinach built the current town hall on the foundations of the old Unterschloss. Today, Steinbrunn-le-Haut charms with its winding streets lined with typical Alsatian half-timbered houses.
Dominated by the Saint Maurice church, built in 1520 in a Gothic style and famous for its altarpiece, the village offers a dive into local history.
