Maginot Line Memorial Museum of the Rhine

The Maginot Line is named after André Maginot, the Minister of War who secured funding to start construction in 1930. Concerned with an effective and economical defense, he stated: "Concrete is better and costs less than breastwork." This extensive system of border fortifications marked French military history before World War II.

The Marckolsheim casemate perfectly illustrates this setup. Designed as a standard structure, it was equipped with two firing chambers to protect a strategic point on the Rhine. Now established as a memorial, it honors the intense battles that took place there from June 15 to 17, 1940.

These clashes left the town of Marckolsheim in ruins, destroyed by more than 80%.
