Mandelberg Hill

Mandelberg, an iconic hill of the Côte des Amandiers, shelters the village of Mittelwihr from northern winds.

Its south-southeast facing slope enjoys optimal sunlight, making this terroir a renowned Grand Cru.

The marl-limestone soil resting on tertiary conglomerates covers 22 hectares, mostly planted with Gewurztraminer (40%) and Riesling (30%), complemented by Tokay Pinot Gris and Muscat. The vines grow alongside almond trees, which gave the Côte des Amandiers its name.

Cultivated since the Gallo-Roman era and later under Frankish lords, Mandelberg and the Mittelwihr vineyard were subsequently managed by medieval abbeys such as Saint-Dié, Ebersmunster, and Murbach. The Mandelberg appellation appeared on Alsace bottles as early as 1925.

Wines from this terroir, of great nobility, are characterized by pronounced fruitiness and exquisite finesse, typical of calcimagnesian soils. They also offer excellent aging potential.
