Marmoutier
After the fire that destroyed the first monastery founded in 589, reconstruction began in 724 under the direction of Abbot Maur, giving the site its name *Mauri monasterium*, or Mauri's monastery. The inhabitants of this area are still called maurimonastériens in tribute to this history.
Located on the Romanesque Route of Alsace, the Marmoutier region comes alive around its remarkable cultural buildings. The abbey church, with its archaeological crypt, bears witness to centuries of history, while the Silbermann organs add a musical dimension to this heritage. The Alsatian heritage and Judaism museum completes this cultural offering, as do local artisans who keep traditional crafts alive. The site is also distinguished by its natural and technical heritage, offering a full immersion into Alsatian history and landscapes. Day discovery packages allow visitors to explore these treasures.
