Mauchenheim Chapel

At the place called Mauchen, located south of Marckolsheim, stands the Saint Gregory Chapel, built in 1246. It is the only remaining trace of the village of Mauchenheim, first mentioned in the year 777. This village, which had between 200 and 250 inhabitants, disappeared between the 1200s and 1300s, a victim of looting, invasions, Rhine floods, and plague epidemics. The chapel's nave dates from the 13th century, although its windows were modified in the 18th century. Its bell tower is in the Baroque style. At the entrance, a reconstruction of 13th-century frescoes depicting a passage from Genesis is visible above the door.
