Medieval Garden
Located opposite the cemetery and accessible via the Véloroute du Vignoble bike path, the medieval garden of Kintzheim is open free of charge during the tourist season. This garden, called Hortus Hypocras, is one of the 11 medieval gardens in the Circuit of the 10 Tourist Communes of Haut-Koenigsbourg. It features shrubs and plants, some of which were used for therapeutic purposes, recalling ancient medieval pharmacopoeias. Monasteries, custodians of botanical knowledge, played a key role in the expansion of these gardens from the 7th and 8th centuries. Traditionally, these spaces were organized into four squares: one for soup vegetables like cabbages, another for aromatic plants, a third for root vegetables like carrots, and the last for fruit plants. The spirit of the Kintzheim garden is illustrated by two explanatory panels.
