Medieval Mikveh
The last witness to the significant medieval Jewish community of Strasbourg, this mikveh was uncovered in 1984 during renovation work. It is a small building of about 9 m², consisting of a central cellar housing a basin that can hold up to 500 liters of water. This water came directly from the groundwater table and was supplemented with warm water for purification rites. The walls retain niches intended to hold candles, while an adjacent room served as a changing area. Probably built between 1200 and 1260, this mikveh is one of the oldest remnants of Jewish architecture in Alsace and the only medieval Jewish building in Strasbourg still visible today. A private guided tour can be arranged on request to discover the little-known history of Alsatian Judaism since the Middle Ages.
