Mittelwihr

Perched at 220 meters above sea level on the Wine Route, Mittelwihr is a charming Alsatian wine village with 867 inhabitants. Located just 10 kilometers from Colmar and 3 from Riquewihr, it stretches at the foot of the mountains, on the edge of a region marked by the history of Germanic princes and the Cistercian order.

Its remains, though rare, testify to this prestigious past: the Bouxhof Farm, a former abbey, and the imposing arcades of the old church, which once housed a simultaneum, a shared place of worship between Catholics and Protestants.

Devastated by 90% in December 1944 during the battles of the Colmar Pocket, Mittelwihr has managed to rise again to establish itself today as a major site of the Alsace vineyard. The village is home to many owner-growers who produce fine and renowned wines. Its exceptional microclimate, earning it the nickname "Midi of Alsace," allows Grand Crus and almond trees to flourish, giving its name to the Mandelberg hill, or Almond Tree Hill. The Grand Cru Mandelberg appellation is the pride of the community.

The heights of Mittelwihr offer peaceful walks with panoramic views over the Rhine Plain and the Vosges foothills. The Grand Crus trail, nicknamed the "Pearls of the Vineyard," invites visitors to discover the vineyard landscapes. The village also has various shops to meet visitors' needs: groceries, newspapers, souvenirs, and tableware, as well as some artisans. Several wine cellars are open year-round, and accommodation is varied: hotel, bed and breakfasts, rural cottages, restaurant, inn-restaurant, and bar. A Welcome Center also hosts study and holiday groups. Don't miss the fountain adorned with a winged horse head, whose spring water never runs dry, symbolizing the vitality of this ideal holiday spot.
