Mothern

As soon as the Rhine became navigable, riverside villages saw the emergence of a community of boatmen with various trades, from cabin boys to captains, including cooks and mechanics.

In Mothern, this tradition gained particular significance in the 1950s: nearly one-third of the village households, about 150 people, worked in this profession. To celebrate their river maritime heritage, the boatmen formed an association and erected a mast, inspired by those on boats, in the Wacht square.

This symbol still today recalls the historical importance of navigation on the Rhine for this locality.
