Murbach Abbey

Perched at the foot of the Grand Ballon, the Murbach Abbey church is reached after a wooded road.

Founded in the 11th century, this monastery was one of the most influential in the Holy Roman Empire. Destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, it was rebuilt and today retains impressive architecture.

The building captivates with its Romanesque pink sandstone façade, a signature stone of the region. The south portal particularly draws attention with its sculpted tympanum. Two stone lions guard the entrance: one, with its tongue out, seems to welcome visitors.

A visit not to be missed for its history and architectural charm.
