Mussig
Located less than 10 kilometers from Sélestat, Mussig is a rural commune in the Alsace Ried.
About 500 meters west of the village, along the edge of the Ill forest, lies a remarkable group of 37 burial mounds. These funerary mounds, remnants from the Iron Age, testify to Celtic civilization and have been protected as historic monuments since 1989. The largest are set in a bucolic environment between the Ill dike and the Brücklisgraben, a small alder-lined stream. These circular mounds range from 0.30 to 1.80 meters in height and 10 to 30 meters in diameter.
Their preservation provides valuable insight into the Celtic past of the region. Mussig also features the Saint-Oswald church and the graves of seven Commonwealth soldiers who fell in Alsace.
For food lovers, the commune offers tasting of Tomme du Ried, a local cheese made from milk of cows raised in the floodplains of the Ried, whose aromatic herbs give the cheese a unique flavor.
Each year, an 8.3-kilometer nighttime gourmet walk allows visitors to discover the village’s hidden landscapes and local specialties through tasting stops.
