Notre-Dame Basilica

In the mid-13th century, a Guillemite priory was founded in Marienthal, near Haguenau. Its church, quickly dedicated to the Virgin Mary, attracted many faithful. Around 1500, this first building was replaced by a Gothic church, still visible today. Between 1720 and 1725, Stanislas Leczinski, the deposed King of Poland settled in Wissembourg, and his daughter Maria visited several times. Later, Marie Leczinska, who became Queen of France by marrying Louis XV, also stayed there. In 1863, architect Charles Morin led expansion works to accommodate a growing influx of pilgrims. Today, the Marienthal basilica continues to be a place of welcome and pilgrimage, as evidenced by its dedicated website.
