Notre-Dame Chapel known as Hippoltskirch

Already mentioned in 1144, the Hippoltskirch chapel is an ancient religious building dedicated to Saint Martin. Classified as a Historic Monument since 1995, it was originally the church of Sondersdorf. In the 12th century, the inhabitants left the banks of the Ill River, exposed to flooding, to settle on the heights, at the current location of the village. In 1778, the construction of the current parish church led to the abandonment of the chapel, which then became a pilgrimage site dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Major works in 1781 gave it its final appearance. A hermit tended the sanctuary until 1920, the year the forest house was built upstream of the chapel. In 1902, lightning struck the building, damaging part of the roof above the Virgin's altar. The damage was significant, but the statue of the Virgin alone remained intact.
