Notre-Dame de Bellefontaine Chapel

The Notre-Dame de Bellefontaine chapel takes its name from a miraculous spring. According to tradition, a wounded hunter in the 16th century dipped his bloodied hand into the water while invoking the Virgin Mary, receiving immediate healing. In gratitude, he placed an image or statue of Mary there. The site quickly became famous throughout the region and turned into a very popular pilgrimage destination. In the mid-18th century, a chapel was built there and entrusted to a hermit. It survived the Revolution without being destroyed and remained a place of worship for the faithful from the two neighboring departments. In 2000, it was recognized as an official pilgrimage site for the Jubilee of Sundgau. Even today, every year on Saint George's Day, riders come to have their horses blessed there.
