Notre Dame de Houppach Chapel

Located in a small valley north of Masevaux, this site is an important pilgrimage destination in Alsace. As early as 1696, a first chapel housed a black statue of the Virgin, destroyed in 1789. A new sanctuary, blessed in 1807, was also demolished. The current chapel, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin, was built in 1875 according to the plans of architect Schacherer from Mulhouse and contractor Gould from Thann. Its neo-Romanesque style is distinguished by a facade topped with a comb-shaped bell tower, rare in Alsace. It is part of the "In the Footsteps of Mary" Churches and Chapels Circuit. After World War II, a holiday camp was established around the pilgrimage. The chapel was restored at the end of the 20th century.
