Notre-Dame de Lorette Chapel
This chapel is located very close to the town of Mutzig, along the Alsace Wine Route, about twenty kilometers west of Strasbourg.
Its history dates back to 1630, when a small monastery was founded in Hermolsheim, now part of Mutzig. In 1666, Gabriel Haug, a suffragan bishop, had a chapel built behind the choir of the monastery church, run by the Recollects, to be buried there after his death.
Sold as national property during the French Revolution, the chapel was demolished in 1795. The monastery church was destroyed in 1800, but the chapel partially survived: only a remnant remains on the west wall. Its name comes from its shape, reminiscent of the Sancta de Loreto, the House of the Virgin in Italy.
Access is through a door opening onto a small courtyard shaded by an old linden tree, planted around 1790. A Renaissance lavabo is embedded in the wall, and above the door are the founder's coat of arms. Inside, his tombstone adorns the modest chapel, which remains private property today.
