Notre Dame du Rhin
On the esplanade, the Statue of the Virgin, comforter of all distress, was inaugurated on September 8, 1862. This work consists of a 7-meter column carved from white stone quarried near Phalsbourg, topped by a 2-meter statue in gilded cast iron representing the Virgin. After World War II, it became a strong symbol for the inhabitants of the Strasbourg region, as it remained intact despite the massive destruction caused by bombings in the surrounding area.
