Oberroedern

The village of Oberrœdern still bears the scars of the fierce battles of January 1945 during World War II. To understand this chapter of history, a visit to the Rieffel Casemate is essential.

This site, restored in 2008, still shows the marks of the 1940 fighting and offers an authentic glimpse into the lives of soldiers of that time.

The Rieffel Casemate was one of the five major fortifications of the main defense line, located between the Schœnenbourg artillery fort and the Hatten shelter. It was manned by a crew of 24 men, led by Lieutenant Rieffel, whose mission was to protect this strategic position at Oberrœdern.
