Offwiller

Perched in the foothills of the Vosges, the village of Offwiller embodies an authentic Alsace through its famous "Schieweschlawe" tradition. This pagan custom is upheld every year on the first Sunday after Mardi Gras: from a clearing overlooking the village, flaming wooden discs are thrown into the sky, once symbolizing the awakening of nature and the spring equinox. A mysterious and captivating spectacle that draws visitors each year, amazed by this unique ancient practice.

Offwiller also charms with its rich cultural heritage. The Museum of Popular Art and Traditions recounts the life of 19th-century peasant-workers, offering an authentic glimpse into their homes and domestic traditions. This educational site allows visitors to immerse themselves in the daily life of these rural communities, between craftsmanship and past ways of living.

For nature lovers, the surroundings of the village are a true paradise. The Eselsplatz and the Col de Steige, two emblematic sites, serve as starting points for numerous hikes. Picnic areas are set up there, inviting well-deserved breaks in the heart of preserved nature. The network of marked trails, extending through the surrounding forest, promises walks rich in discoveries and varied landscapes.
