Old Commandery of St John
At the end of the 12th century, the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Johannites, established a hospital here. Their presence was challenged by the local clergy, who saw them as competition, but they eventually gained the support of Pope Gregory IX in 1227. The site's church was consecrated in 1268 by Albert the Great, a renowned Dominican theologian. However, the commandery gradually declined from 1530 and was sold in 1796. In 1858, the Sisters of Divine Providence of Ribeauvillé purchased the building and transformed it into a school. This institution, still active, was named Institut Saint-Jean in 1918. In the 19th century, renovations significantly altered the building, leaving only a few facade elements from the original structure.
