Old Great Butchery

Built in 1587 by the city of Strasbourg to replace an old slaughterhouse dating back to the 13th century, the Grande Boucherie is attributed to the municipal architect Hans Schoch, who also designed the Neubau. Completed in 1588, this U-shaped building was once accessible by two now-disappeared staircases and a spiral staircase located in the inner courtyard. The ground floor, open to the street, housed the butchers' stalls to the north, while the east and west wings served as vaulted cold rooms. The first floor hosted theatrical performances and served as additional space during trade fairs.

An 18th-century plan reveals the presence of several buildings dedicated to other commercial activities around the Grande Boucherie. This utilitarian building, a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture, underwent various uses in the 19th century before being transformed in 1919 to house the Historical Museum of the City of Strasbourg.
