Old Island Media Library
Built in 1783 at the initiative of the Alsace intendant and funded by the city, this Louis XVI-style building is distinguished by its straight and elegant lines, evoking lightness and refinement.
Designed to care for civilians and military personnel, it served this function during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars.
Later, it housed a poorhouse depot, equivalent to today's social emergency services, before being transferred to the Ministry of Justice in 1822.
The ministry first established a women's central prison there, then a men's penitentiary center, which closed in 1987.
Purchased by the city, the building was partially converted into a University Institute of Technology (IUT) in 1996, while a media library opened in the other wing in 2001. Since 2022, this media library has been part of the TILT network, which includes the nine libraries of the Haguenau Agglomeration.
Before these adaptations, the site also served as a set for a helicopter escape scene in the film "La fille de l'air," starring Béatrice Dalle.
