Old Jewish Cemetery
Perched away from the village in a green setting, the old Jewish cemetery of Hagenthal-le-Haut offers a discreet yet powerful testimony to the long-standing presence of Jewish communities in the Sundgau. Used jointly by the inhabitants of Hagenthal-le-Haut and Hagenthal-le-Bas, this memorial site houses numerous tombstones, some dating back to the 18th century. The inscriptions carved in stone reveal the history of the families who lived in the surrounding villages and illustrate the richness of rural Jewish life in Alsace at that time.
Among the graves, some ancient stones stand out for the delicacy of their engravings and decorative motifs, providing a valuable insight into Alsatian Jewish funerary art. The oldest tombstone still visible on the site dates from 1750, confirming the antiquity of this resting place.
Today, the cemetery is preserved in a peaceful environment, inviting a visit that is both historical and intimate. A stop to understand the cultural and religious diversity that has shaped the history of the Sundgau over the centuries.
