Old Schiltigheim
In the heart of Schiltigheim, a few picturesque remnants of the old village recall its past. Several half-timbered houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved and restored, notably on rue Principale where you can admire the Auberge du Cheval Blanc as well as numbers 10, 15, and 26. Other examples can be found on rue d’Adelshoffen. Among the remarkable buildings, the villa Wenger-Valentin, built in 1882 on the site of a castle destroyed in 1676, stands out with its style of a grand late 19th-century manor house. It is located in the Château park at 1 rue de la Patrie. This residence belonged to a family of bankers, including Edmond Valentin, prefect of Bas-Rhin in 1870. While strolling through the town, you can also discover beautiful Art Nouveau works, such as the former drugstore at 30 rue Principale, whose facade decorated with frescoes recalls its former activity. These villas illustrate the prosperity of Schiltigheim at the beginning of the 20th century, visible notably on rue Principale, rue de Barr, rue de Mundolsheim, and rue de Rosheim.
