Old Synagogue of Romanswiller

The current synagogue dates back to 1738, when it was first built. By around 1840, it had fallen into ruin, leading to the construction of a new building in 1849. After being acquired by the municipality in 1956, it now houses a music school that remains active. The Jewish presence in the region is documented from the second half of the 17th century. In the 18th century, the community flourished with between 150 and 160 members, organizing intellectual and religious life. Their number reached 240 in 1808. In 1843, the synagogue was reported to be in very poor condition, prompting its reconstruction and reopening in 1894. Today, some ritual objects remain in this synagogue as well as in the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions in Marmoutier.
