Old Windstein Castle

Perched on a rocky outcrop reaching 410 meters in altitude, the Old Windstein is a semi-troglodyte castle built by the Hohenstaufen at the end of the 12th century. Its unique architecture relies on a natural rock ridge, while its network of underground galleries reflects its adaptation to the steep terrain. Subject to several assaults, notably by the Strasbourg forces in 1332, the site was definitively destroyed in 1676 by French troops. Despite these trials, it remains a historic relic where one can still sense the ingenuity of its builders and the traces of its turbulent past.
