Olwisheim
Olwisheim is an Alsatian street village with origins dating back to Roman times, as evidenced by the nearby Brumath, an ancient Roman military city called Brotomagus, located about 7 km away. The community preserves an old Alsatian tradition called the Maie or Maiestecke, also known as "The May Trees."
Every year, on the eve of Ascension Thursday, unmarried men over fourteen gather at night in the Linden Tree Square. Their task is to quietly place a tree in front of the houses of unmarried girls of the same age, often accompanied by straw on the sidewalk.
Additionally, Olwisheim celebrates the storming of the Bastille every July 13th with a festive evening in the central square. The mayor opens the festivities, followed by songs performed by the local choir. This celebration traditionally ends with the distribution of the 14th of July Wecke, a brioche pastry shaped like a little man.
