Ottmarsheim

Ottmarsheim, an Alsatian locality, houses archaeological remains dating back to the Roman era. First mentioned in 881, it came under French rule in 1648. In the early 19th century, its population grew slowly, but between 1851 and 1941, the town experienced a significant demographic decline. Its poor soil, difficult to irrigate and often prone to flooding, limited its agricultural development. From 1948 onwards, Ottmarsheim experienced a turning point with the arrival of industry: the Alsace canal, the hydroelectric power plant, and the port area revitalized the region and encouraged demographic recovery.
