Paul Messner Chapel

Designed and built between 1870 and 1880 by Dr. Paul Messner, this chapel is distinguished by its biblical decorations and ceramic bas-reliefs depicting about fifty figures, including angels and saints. The pointed choir houses an altar topped with a Deposition scene, where Mary supports the body of Jesus. On either side of the altar, the tomb is shown sometimes sealed, sometimes open, while the diaphragm arch features a fresco of the Resurrection. The side walls illustrate the Beatitudes, accompanied by texts engraved on raised tablets. Restored between 1986 and 1990 under the direction of architect Jean-Marie Scheydecker, the chapel was inaugurated after the work by Bishop Emeritus Léon-Arthur Elchinger of Strasbourg, who was originally from the village.
