Pfeffel Monument

This statue pays tribute to Théophile Conrad Pfeffel, a poet and educator from Colmar, born in 1736 and died in 1809.

It is actually a replica, made in 1927 by the Colmar sculptor Charles Geiss.

The original work, created by André Friedrich in 1859, was placed in front of the Unterlinden Museum before being damaged.

A bronze copy replaced it in 1899, but this was removed in September 1918 and sent to Frankfurt to be melted down to support the war effort.

The current statue, installed in the square next to the former sovereign palace, thus preserves the memory of this emblematic figure of the city.
