Place du Maréchal Foch
By taking the rue du Maréchal Joffre, you come upon the Place du Maréchal Foch, dominated by an elegant Renaissance fountain.
Erected in 1534 by the inhabitants of Rouffach, it pays tribute to Guillaume de Honstein, bishop of Strasbourg and landgrave of Alsace. He is celebrated here for restoring the city and promoting peace.
The current basin is a modern reconstruction, but the shaft retains a detailed Latin inscription: *Sub rev. k. Domino Wilhelmo ex comitibus de Honsteyn, episcopo Argentinensi, Alsaciae landgravio, pio renovatore urbis Rubeacensis et candido pacis culture optimo principe S.P.Q.R. me statuit et scaturiri effecit anno MDXXXIV*.
This phrase highlights his commitment to Rouffach, formerly called Rubeacensis.
