Plaine

Nestled in the heart of the Bruche valley, on the southern slope of the Donon massif, at the edge of the Vosges, Plaine is a village where homes are scattered among the hamlets of Champenay, Poutay, Diespach, and Devant-Fouday.

With 958 inhabitants in 2009, it embodies authentic rural life, marked by a rich historical past: once part of the Principality of Salm, it was crossed by the "Route des Princes," remnants of which still exist on the slopes of the Côte de Plaine (807 m), which once connected the principality to Alsace.

World War I left deep scars, notably in the destruction of the church and the presence of a military cemetery, testimonies to the violence endured. Today, Plaine charms with its traditional architecture, typical house-barns, and flower-filled gardens in summer. Surrounded by conifer forests crossed by streams, the village is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, does, roe deer, and wild boars roaming freely. Perched at 900 meters altitude, the Chatte Pendue observatory offers an exceptional panorama, allowing, on clear days, a view of Strasbourg Cathedral on the horizon.
