Plobsheim Water Basin
Stretching over eight kilometers between Strasbourg and Erstein, the Plobsheim water basin is the largest artificial basin in the Bas-Rhin department. This clear, shallow body of water, averaging three meters deep, covers the former alluvial forest that once bordered the Rhine. The site hosts lush flora and diverse aquatic fauna, including species such as roach, tench, perch, catfish, and pike.
In winter, it becomes a haven for many migratory birds, especially waterfowl, which find refuge here. This water basin is recognized as a unique place in Europe for the richness of its ecosystem, particularly for the wintering of water birds. Each year, counts record an average of 13,000 individuals, making this site the most important on the Rhine in terms of the number of birds observed in winter.
It also hosts more than fifteen rare species.
Today, this area, shared between nature and human activities, features a popular nautical base for sailing enthusiasts, offering a refreshing getaway just thirteen kilometers from Strasbourg. However, it is important to note that swimming is strictly prohibited.
