Polder

The Erstein polder is a vast flood retention structure on the Rhine, designed to play an ecological role while regulating the river's overflow. Covering 600 hectares, this basin can store up to 7.8 million cubic meters of water in less than fifteen hours, thereby reducing flood risks downstream. It occupies the site of a former alluvial forest that naturally extended across the Rhine's floodplain before major canalization works were carried out from the second half of the 20th century. Today, this site combines hydraulic function with biodiversity preservation, providing a habitat conducive to local wildlife and plant life. Free guided tours are offered by reservation, allowing visitors to discover this unique project that blends engineering and ecology.
