Porte du Bas - Untertor
The Porte du Bas, or Untertor, marks the entrance to the town center of Mutzig, located on the Alsace wine route about thirty kilometers from Strasbourg.
Raised in 1559, this medieval gate is one of the most remarkable remnants of the city's old fortifications.
Its east facade is adorned with a Saint Maurice, the coat of arms of Mutzig, painted in 1895.
Until 1775, it was preceded by a barbican, an advanced fortification that was replaced by a monumental arch demolished in 1894.
The tower of the Porte du Bas once housed dungeons where trials were held in the Middle Ages, notably for witchcraft and infanticide cases, records of which are preserved in the city archives.
