Post Office
The Strasbourg Post Office, inaugurated in 1899, embodies a clear political intent: to make the Neustadt the new administrative and political heart of the city.
Until then, the central post office was located at Cathedral Square, a historic symbol of Strasbourg. Its relocation to the Neustadt, driven by the German imperial government, reflects this ambition for modernization and centralization of power.
The building's architecture sharply contrasts with the surrounding institutional buildings, all designed in a neo-Renaissance style.
The Secretary of State for the Post, Heinrich von Stephan, secured the approval of Emperor Wilhelm II for a neo-Gothic project. The Kaiser himself justified this choice by stating that this style represents "a very fitting interruption of the Renaissance style," thus highlighting the desired aesthetic and symbolic break.
