Ramparts and Fortified Cemetery

The first written record of this fortification dates back to 1298. Protected by a double ring of ramparts called the "fortified cemetery" (totaling 900 meters in length), the castle district housed the church, the cemetery, the bailiwick house (Amthaus), wells, probably two fortified houses including the current presbytery, as well as at least twenty individual houses. Access was through the tower gate of 1405, uncertainly nicknamed the Witches' Tower. Several defensive towers reinforced the walls, with the interior dating from the first half of the 13th century and the exterior from the late 14th or early 15th century. The district's population was estimated at about one hundred people in 1489. Since 2001, the "Tremplins" integration team has been working on the site for its consolidation and enhancement. It is possible to walk around the site all year round. Every second Sunday of June, the Ramparts Association organizes "The Ramparts Festival": a medieval event with nearly four hundred costumed participants (morning parade), entertainment troupes, jousting tournaments, games, period music and dances, a medieval market, as well as specialties like spit-roasted wild boar and other refreshments.
